One angle that makes sense is that in the time that cars have evolved... a steering wheel is still a steering wheel, and pedals do the same thing, be it a 1950s hot rod or a 2015 model year pickup. UI changes for fashion's sake are pointless at best, a productivity waster at worst.
Actually many things on vehicles have changed over the years.. Some for the good and some for the bad..
Not ALL vehicles built over the years had steering wheels or even pedals (brake/throttle).
Many early cars (188x-192x) used "tillers" for steering, hand throttles, manual spark advance levers, hand brake levers, hand gear shift levers and hand cranks to start them.
Even though I point that out, I do not feel that changing things just for the sake of change is not ALWAYS in the best interest or even needed. THAT is the main issue with MS Win products once you get past Win 95 UI (I would agree that Win3.1 was rather clunky UI). Each version after Win95 the UI has been changed for no real reason other than garnering sales from those folks who always "have to have the latest fad thing".
There is no real compelling reason that makes me "want" or "need" W8x. I took me a long time to make my XP look and feel like my Win98, at work it took me 2 weeks of time tweeking and "UN 7" W7 and make it look and feel more like XP.
Each successive Win version has taken away USEFUL controls and features and what was not taken away was moved and hidden by changing names of the programs. Many of the useful controls and features which were removed either has no replacement or the replacement makes you DEPEND MORE ON MS "cloud" or "store" (read in lost privacy, security of your info and freedom of buying software from OTHER COMPETING "vendors")..
If you think Win8x is bad, folks forget about trying anything like Windows Server 2012.. They have dumbed down the interface to the point it is useless (Tiles and power shell interface, the desktop is a mere shell of it's former self).
I have no wants or needs for touch screens and "tiles" (businesses don't want them either)and there is no way I am willing to spend money on third party programs to restore things that MS took out of the UI. Nor am I willing to spend countless hrs trying to make Win8x work the way I work just because someone in Redmond decided to I should work the way THEY want me to..
