Which GPS Unit?

I may be interested in a GPS device, but don't own a smartphone. Can anyone recommend a stand-alone unit that doesn't require a smart phone? Thanks.
  • I have had a couple and never had good results, on top of that I was upset I had to pay for updates...that still didnt help!

Got a smart phone and use Google maps, never an issue.
  • Just make sure it has lifetime maps, so you don't have to pay for updates.
  • We have two Garmin and a Rand McNally. We use the Rand McNally most of the time. All the time in MH.
Garmin work just OK, however both have to re-calculate too often.
  • The 2 main contenders are Garmin and TomTom. Both work well, each is different in it's own right. Both will get you to where you want to go. Both have different models with various price ranges, depending upon the bells and whistles you are looking for.

For what it's worth, I got a new TomTom this last Summer, and for the life of me I cannot get it to coorporate with my computer. Somehow, there is suppose to be a way to plot a driving course on the computer and supposedly, be able to transfer that to the actual TomTom. How to do it is a complete mystery to me. Their web site is the most unfriendly site I've dealt with in a long-long time. I gave up on the web site. But if plotting on the actual device, it works very nice.
  • Garmin Nuvi, only difference that matters between all the models is the size of the screen

Garmin Dezi / RV if you have lots of $$$$
