If it's the kind you can rotate and has an amplifier (switch with red light) I make sure the amplifier is off. raise the antenna and with the TV on I rotate the antenna to get the best signal on the channel I will watch the most. Then I turn on the amplifier and fine tune the antenna to get the best signal on a couple of favorite channels.
If there are other RVs nearby with the TV antennas up try to orient yours in the same direction to start with then fine tune.
The wing tips are perpendicular to the signal coming in.
