Wifi app for iPhone?

I am curious if anyone knows if there is an app to allow an iPhone to become a Wifi Hotspot. I have unlimited date on my phone, through AT&T. If I go through AT&T to set up the hotspot account, I have to change my data plan. I do not want to change my plan since I have unlimited data and it is not offered anymore.

I also have the iPhone unlimited AT&T WiFi. We were grandfathered from our last iPhone for the unlimited WiFi. If you get a new phone or other data features added you lose the unlimited WiFi.

You can get a new phone and keep your unlimited data plan but you are right about changing plans. If you do that then you can't go back.

I believe you can tether with your unlimited plan IF you Jailbreak the phone but there are downsides to that.

I to left my unlimited plan as we, with 3 phones, were not using a lot of data. When I switched plans, and with the last software update, the option is now available to use as a hotspot. Even using it as a hotspot, we still do not come close to maxing our data. With the unlimited plan, AT&T will charge you $30 to activate the hotspot. (or jailbreak the phone, which BTW is perfectly legal to do)Even my tablet has a hotspot option
  • I left my unlimited plan for the $45/4GB hotspot plan. No regrets. With 3.0, you could tether with a USB cable which I did and made my laptop the WAP for my wifes iPad, but eventually had to upgrade killing the "free tethering".

I checked my data usage back as far as I had had the phone and had never used more than a few GB in a month so I switched. Now, last week, we were camping and DW was working from my Hoptspot and I got a 3GB warning from ATT but she was doing lot of uploads and downloads of pictures. BTW and additional GB is $10 if you go over so not the end of the world.

How much data do you go through in a month?

Most people would never even come close to making any use of "unlimited" data. And you'd likely be throttled at some point if you use too much. It's so much easier to have ATT's hotspot.

I have unlimited data, I guess the unlimited Wifi must have been a different plan. It would be nice to be able to use my phone as a hotspot when we are camping.

Can you plug the USB cable from your iPhone into a CradlePoint router and make a hotspot that way? I don't know; it was just a thought. We have a CradlePoint that works with a USB modem from Cricket.

  • Not an app but on my I-Phone 5 if you go to "Settings" the 5th choice down is "Personal Hotspot". I have Verizon and it works great. My new RV GPS locks on in seconds to give me real time weather and other updates direct from the internet.
