I came home from work one night and found three strange cars parked in front of my house. The drivers were sitting in the cars. I asked my daughter what was going on and she said that they were probably using our WIFI. I found out that a local web site had published a list of local WIFI hotspots and my house was on the list.
I put a password on my router and it hasn't happened again.
The school located a quarter of a mile from me has wifi and they didn't password it initially. I could access their wifi - but the signal was weak and the data transfer rate was pretty slow and spotty.
No one commented on this? The OP claims they are in the country and on a free wifi list on the internet. So if true clearly the router was not password protected.
