Wifi hotspot

Again this weekend I find myself in a campground with no wifi. AT&T wants $50/month for me to use my iPhone as a hot stop. Are there any third party vendors that are available to create a hotspot?
  • I have Samsung Galaxy S3 Android with Verizon and use FoxFi app. No problems with free WiFi hot spot here. Not sure if there is an IOS version of Foxfi or not.

You can also use PDAnet with tether to one computer.
  • T mobile has no charge to use smart phone as hot spot. I do it all the time with my galaxy
  • Does that fact that he said AT&T matter?

    20 GB/month @ $70 using the Verizon data network.
    That's more than ATT wants.
  • I have a Verizon box on a pay-per-month play that I carry. If we are going to be in a spot without free wifi for a while, I just pay for a month and use that. After the time runs out, there is no monthly charge while I am not using it.

    Three things oldman,

    - I'll wager the AT&T plan he's talking about is not 20 GB/mon for $50.

    - Millenicom is a Pay-As-You-Go. So when he doesn't need it, he stops the service.

    - OP asked for "third party vendors". Millenicom is 3rd party.

I found this on Amazon. Any idea how well it works. Is there a monthly fee or is it simply purchase the unit??

I pay $30 for 3gigs of data with ATT, Hot spot plan is $50 and then give you 5 gigs for that phone. So in that case it should only be $20 more to add hotspot plan to your basic phones data plan. Good deal if you just need to check email and limited surfing.

Not sure about all the tangent discussions here.

That is an access point. It needs a wireless router with a wifi signal to work. It is meant to extend an existing wifi signal a further distance. It will not do what you are looking for.

This link will give you apps for Iphone that work like FoxFi which right now is only for Android. These will access your iphone data plan and turn your phone into a hot spot. You will not be charged extra but you will be using your phones data - so be aware that data gets used on a laptop browser a lot faster than it gets used on a cell phone's browser. One streaming two hour movie will use two gb of data or more. These programs are great for simple web browsing and for email.
