WiFi network

I just bought a WiFi enabled printer for my motorhome, and need some help in setting up a network.
i have a WiFi enabled laptop and this printer. How do I go about in enabling the two to communicate with each other?
Do I need a router or something like this? I have an older Lynksis router/modem laying around, could I use this for that purpose?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • What printer did you buy? I'll tell you in 2 minutes if you need a router or not.
  • We do not use a router.....have had two wireless printers that we have used...and did it all thru the laptop.
  • If your printer has Bluetooth and your computer doesn't, you can plug THIS into a USB port to add Bluetooth to your computer.
  • See if the printer will do "wifi direct", which most new ones will do, I believe. That allows the computer to talk directly to the printer, no router needed.
  • I installed a router for the same reason but had a problem after that. The PC always wanted to connect to the internet through the router so I'd have to disconnect it to get internet using wifi. I'm sure there's a work around but I don't know what the answer is.
  • If you do not want or need to setup a router in your RV, check to see if the new printer supports Bluetooth printing, many newer WIFI printers do. Using Bluetooth (if available on the printer and laptop) will let you print from the Laptop directly to Printer with no need to set up a router to be a middle man.
  • Yes, it all done through a router. Lynksis is a good brand. It all depends on the age. I would try the one you have before buying a new one.
