Wifi question

We have been traveling cross country and every so often I come to a park and everyone around me has Wifi, but I only get a "limited" connection which is really nothing at all. I kept thinking it was me but today we decided to stay in a motel and I can't connect to the Motels Wifi at all, BUT there is a hotel next door and I'm connecting to it just fine.
Is there something I can do about it. I have a VAIO if that makes any difference,
Thanks so much in advance

  • It may be the laptop you are using - or its built in wifi connection. You might also try updating the drivers. We were at one campground where my wife's laptop would not connect at all but I was able to connect with both a tablet and a laptop with no problem. We bought her a USB wifi adapter and plugged that in with the laptop's own wifi turned off and she was able to connect then at that campgound. This has happened in a few campgrounds we have been in. There was one where my tablet would connect but the laptop wouldn't.

It may not be how strong the signal the wifi is putting out but the type of signal it is putting out. My laptop and tablet are newer than my wife's laptop that would not connect.
  • Could be some incompatibility or a weak signal. On many campgrounds my iphone would not connect but the ipad and laptop have stronger wifi antennas.
Now if only campgrounds could get into this century and realize that us young people live on the Internet. We are the people who are going to make or break the campground industry once all the baby boomers retire from camping.
I use my phone as a wifi hotspot. 2.5GB plan for 60$ and I can add extra 1GB for 10$ each. This is what I do on most campgrounds since wifi is usually not working or too slow to be of any use.
  • Is that what my problem is, a weak signal because the hotel where I am now that I can't connect to has a stronger signal than the hotel next door that I'm connected to.

about five years ago I finally got fed up with all the so called free WIFI places...

I now use the VERIZON MIFI unit which creates its on WIFI HOT SPOT and works anywhere you get VERIZON CELL PHONE SERVICE which is just about everywhere...

This MIFI Hot Spot can connect to five of my devices all at the same time. Perfect for my two portable laptop computers and my two tablets. We check in with kids everynight, pay bills, do some surfing of the internet.

My MIFI plan is only a small 3GB datatplan but bigger dataplans are available.

Sure is nice to always have secure connectivity just about anywhere we go.
