wifi will not connect-multicast key problem

I have a laptop running windows vista that has connected to many different wifi locations without problems. I am in a new location with only one wifi possible connection.
The wifi location SECURITY TYPE is a WPA-PSK with encription type TKIP. I have the valid passphrase for the router and can connect multiple android wireles devices but not the laptop. Windows event viewer reports (laptop) key exchange initiated, unicast keys received = yes, multicast keys received = no

The windows event log also says layer 2 security key exchange did not generate multicast keys before timeout.

I do not have access to the router to reboot it, but believe it to be working properly since I can connect multiple android devices to it.

Any ideas about how to correct this problem are welcome.

  • You can download the drivers to the DW's tablet, move them to your laptop and then install them.
  • thanks for all the good suggestions. I will update drivers when I can get the laptop connected to the internet. I'm getting along for now with
    dw's tablet.

  • My old vista will ask for a pass key and down in the left hand corner in blue print . It says if use need to enter a pass phase click here.Never saw the diff until I got a new router.
  • If that is the issue then you will have to get an update for the card or you can buy a USB wifi adapter (cheap) and plug it into your current computer. Fixed today!
  • Check to see if your wireless card has an updated driver available, either from Microsoft (via Windows Update) or from the manufacturer's website.

Of course, you'll have to find a WiFi signal you can connect to in order to do that.
  • Bill, you may be right. It is about 4 or 5 years old. If anyone else has any ideas about how to make this work please add your comments.

  • How old is the laptop? If it's several years old it's quite possible that the wireless card does not have the correct firmware that would allow it to connect to the newer levels of security.
