Folks, the way to control automatic updating over expensive data connections is to set your Wi-Fi connection to "Metered". Then, Update is controlled until you allow them.

If possible, I'd periodically take 1 machine to a "free" Wi-Fi location just to run Updates, then bring it back to the local LAN or peer-to-peer Homegroup and let it feed the other machines.
