Windows 10 update messed up computer

Today the desktop did an automatic Win 10 update that took over 2 hours. Now has Op System Ver 15063.632. Now several programs don't work that did work with previous Win 10 version and some programs lost all pre-sets such as printer setups info and required me to re-enter all data, Is there a way to.. revert my Desktop to its' condition prior to the update.. To make it worse, this computer belongs to the DW and if you are the on duty tech support, you know what that means!!!. Maybe I should have turned auto-update off months ago??

  • Windows 10 Professional has capabilities to run older version software, as did Windows 7 Professional.
  • When Windows starts an update, the first thing it does is to create a System Restore point. This allows the user to revert back in case something goes wrong. You'll want to perform a System Restore.

As an aside, I updated three computers from Win 7 to Win 10 - Two computers are okay, but the third would not run an older software program. (Same software on all three machines.) I ended by restoring backward to Win 7 on that one machine.

I wish I did not have to say this but...

Common.. Windows back in the original days there was "Backwards Compatibility" so the if you updated the old programs still worked.. But starting with either 7 or 8 (Forget which) they started dropping this requirement.

Sometimes you can hack the program's settings and change the compability settings (Mostly Firefox Aps on that and frankly I forget how to do it).

Sometimes you can run the program in "Compability Mode" and that will work.

You need to investigate Compability mode.

But that's one of the thigns I do not like about Windows. Sadly I don't have a choice as there is no Linux version of some of the stuff I use.
  • I have that version and don't have any of the problems you describe. Try again.
  • If you have Windows 10 type the word "Sleep" in the little search box they put in the bottom left corner. Pick the Power & Sleep Settings choice that pops up. It gives you a window with settings for what the computer does when it's plugged in and when it's not plugged in. That should solve that problem.
  • mine did the update and now I have to sign in everytime the computer goes to sleep which is about every ten seconds or so. if I don't use it it goes to sleep and I called microsoft and even they didn't fix it.
  • If someone knows how to turn off auto-update in Windows 10 I would like to know. I bought a new laptop for DW and I almost took it back because it was updating almost endlessly. Finally I tried a trick I had read before. If you set your connection to be a "metered connection" then the automatic updates stop in order to not use up your metered Internet connection. Someday Bill will find a way to stop us from doing that so that Microsoft can have total control of our PCs. Edit: And if you do a re-install there is a way to get to a Fresh Start re-install that removes all of the extra software that the manufacturer puts on the PC. That helped the performance of the laptop, too.
  • What you want to do is called a System Restore. Try Googling "System Restore Windows 10."
  • That's the WIN10 we know and love. Can't wait until they dump WIN10 and start over once again.
