Alan, what machine are you running Linux mint? I might give that a try. Can you run it right along side windows i.e. dual boot ?
I'm running it on a Toshiba Satellite C55D-B5214, running an AMD cpu. I've got it set up as a dual-boot system so I can run the stuff that doesn't run in linux. I can read the Windows partition from linux, but the Windows side can't see the linux side at all. I use a program called "Play on linux" to run some Windows programs, but not everything works with it, so I need to keep Windows around for some stuff.
If you're going to try Linux mint pretty much everyone recommends using release 18. There is a release 19 out there, but it has a ton of issues wih drivers and other stuff so I don't think anybody is using it. You can get a lot of good info from their web forum:
