There are a lot of Linux distributions out there. I replaced Windows 10 on one of my desktops several months ago with Zorin OS. It took a little investigation on how to install it but it went well. It's a good option to Winows and has many apps comparable to the Windows equivalents.

No you don't need to start it every time you start the computer, but you may need to run it after a windows update which may reactivate the process's. Window's reports to over 40 different companies collecting data(spying) on you. Your CPU has better things to do. You can also use the app to restore the processes if you wish.

An interesting way to "dual boot" is to run your Windows installation in a window inside Linux. Should work on most Intel processors from the past seven years. Of course this is beyond the scope of this thread.

For every day use I use linux mint instead of Microsoft - I have 100% complete control of when updates are downloaded and installed. The only thing I use Microsoft for any more is Streets&Trips, TurboTax, Rootsmagic (genealogy program), and an old machine embroidery digitizing program. EVERYTHING else is linux-based.
