Windows 10 Users.. Homegroup

Has anyone else experienced the loss of the "Homegroup" function after upgrading to WINDOWS 10, Version 1709, OS Build 16299.125? My nHomegroup disappeard on all three of my household PC's after upgrading?? According to Dell tech support, MS determined that this feature was no longer necessary with the advent of the "Cloud".. Would have liked a warning! or am I wrong?

  • Yes this is coming but hasn't happened yet, even in preview versions. OP still has home group, something else is preventing it from working.
  • A cut&paste from gHacks dot net.

" As it stands right now, Microsoft will pull HomeGroup from the next feature update of Windows 10 that will be out in March 2018. This won't affect the feature on previous versions of Windows, nor on previous versions of the Windows 10 operating system.

Microsoft's explanation for the retiring of the HomeGroup feature is that it is not needed anymore. HomeGroup was "great" in the pre-cloud and pre-mobile era the company notes; the feature has run its course and has been replaced by modern alternatives so Microsoft.

Microsoft recommends two company features to replace HomeGroup on devices running Windows 10:
    •OneDrive for file storage.
•The Share functionality to share folders and printers without using the cloud.
•Using Microsoft Accounts to share data between apps that support syncing (e.g. Mail app). "

    Art.
  • I don't use the Homegroup option but my version of Windows 10 Pro appears to support it. Version 1709 build 16299.125

The network setting pages have options to create and modify the homegroup setting.
  • I had the same problem. I tried creating the home group but couldn't. I had to clear any trace of a home group. Then I joined the new group created on another computer first with the new password. It took me several tries to finally get it to work.

  • Took this for you. My laptop currently doesn't trust my home wifi, I think this occurred after a recent update.

Running Windows 10 Pro Insider 1709 build 17046.rs_prerelease.171118-1403

  • I have two Win 10 (ASUS and Samsung) and one Win 7 (Dell) they are all still on Homegrp with no issues I can detect.
  • I don't see any mention of that feature being removed on my insider mailing list.

What's happened recently is many network connections were reset from private to public. Homegroup is not available on public connections.

That could be your issue. Also homegroup requires ipv6 to work so if something on your network is disrupting ipv6 that will cause trouble.
