I wouldn't upgrade an existing machine from Win 7 to Win 8 but I also wouldn't hesitate to buy a new machine that comes with Win 8.
Win 8 is essentially Win 7 with an added interface that you don't need to use if you don't want to. The new interface can be used with a touchscreen but actually works better with a mouse and keyboard.
Many people are completely lost without the Start menu but there are so many different ways that Windows provides to be able to access the programs on the computer that the Start menu is actually redundant and unnecessary. For those that absolutely must have a Start menu, there are utilities available that can be installed to provide a Start menu.
I personally haven't encountered much in the way of software incompatibilities with Win 8 other than my backup program (Acronis True Image).
