I got kind of lost in your post but it seems like you have Word 2007? That program nativeley saves the file with a docx extension. Word 2003 I believe was the last one to save as doc. If you have 2003 or earlier it will not open docx on its own. Microsoft has a free add-on available for the older Word(s) to allow them to open docx files. None of this has anything to do with Win 7 or Win 8 but I don't think that you were saying that anyway.
