I too still have two DELL M90 LAPTOP Computer WORKSTATIONs using WIN XP. Both my home and RV setups are almost the same configuration using the DELL DOCKING STATION and same setup at both locations. All I do is remove my DELL M90 from home location and use as is at the RV location. There is almost no difference in operations at either place.

I will continue to use this until I upgrade my LAPTOPS. They are getting old as well but works great... I will be looking for more OFF-LEASE DELL M6700 series or newer high end DELL XPS Work stations

I doubt upgrading to WIN 7 or WIN 8 will do me much good as all the software I have will probably not work anyway...

For me I think looking for a new Workstation LAPTOP that supports my computer needs already working on WIN 7 or WIN 8 is my way out of this.

  • As others have mentioned, your copy of XP will continue to work, it does not mean that your PC will no longer bootup to XP.

The only thing it means is MS is no longer paying folks to research, find and fix broken things in the XP OS.

What this means to you is they are no longer dedicating manpower or time to find all those really obscure security risks which may be leftover.

The good news though is XP in its final form of SP3 is very mature which means it is stable.

The downside is if a hacker is willing to put in years of messing around with XP they "could" find one of the obscure never found security risks..

Over all you should be fine as long as your PC does not have a hardware failure or you get hit by malware or a virus..

I myself am going to continue to use my XP PCs until the hardware gives out and even then I have a legal copy of W7 to install on a new system board in the future (I bought a W7 copy before they disappear).

Do make backup copies of your important files as a just in case thing.
  • Keep running it but make sure you use a good AntiVirus system, and stop using Internet Explorer (if you are). Try using another browser like Firefox or Chrome. Both will continue to support security updates into the near future...
  • Doesn't mean XP will stop working - just that you won't get any more updates.

We made the jump to Win8 a few months ago, against our will (our laptop died and Best Buy didn't have any Win7 machines on the floor). Couldn't be happier. Once you use "classic shell" to get around that silly "metro" screen and get to the desktop, it's the most stable Windows I've ever used (going back to Win3). From what I read, it's also the most secure Windows yet. Much as I miss XP (I knew how to tweak it), I really like Win8 (and I'm learning how to tweak it).

  • You can keep using it, there will just be no further fixes or security updates. I also believe you will be stuck on Internet Explorer 8 if that is your browser of choice.
