WINEGARD Antenna Problem / Complaint

I have a 1995 Rexhall 34 ft. that I recently bought and find that the Winegard antenna , likely original, does not seem to pick up VHF stations ... only UHF.

I tried to call Winegard ... and as usual, they will not come to the phone directly. They ALWAYS ask you to leave a message which they will NEVER-EVER return. This is nothing new, since I have had to call them in past years, and got the same treatment.

I did send an E-Mail which prompted a series of 9 e-mail exchanges yesterday ....none of which gave me any clue as to what the problem was, and what the FIX could be.

I am fed up with them, and found a KING CONTROLS replacement head, that the RV dealer said is MUCH better than Winegard, so I plan to buy that one.

Has anyone had the VHF problem ... and has anyone had experience with King Controls head ?

Thanks ... Richard

  • Thanks for the responses.

    I do get 30 UHF stations , even Charlotte 3.1 3.2 ( I am between Greenville and Spartanburg ) .. there are 3 stations here that I should get (4 - 7 - 13 ) and their .1 .2 etc secondary channels.

I did talk to the tower engineer at channel 7 ( WSPA ) in Spartanburg, and he felt the problem was ion the antenna, and that I should easily get the signal.

I am at a loss on it, since I cannot get sensible answers or direction from Winegard. I guess it is their lack of customer service that really offends me. They did say that the UHF circuit is different than the VHF circuit ... and the VHF side may have gone bad.

That is pretty vague and does not impress me if THEY cannot say it has ever happened before.

    Thanks Again ... Richard
  • I installed the Jack Replacement Head a few months back and can say that in the CG in which I installed it, the performance was on par with the Winegard Sensar with Wingman. I cannot say that it was better or worse at this time. It had no problem pulling in VHF channels (digital with the .1, etc channel numbers).

I will be travelling on a 2 week road trip to CA with only the Jack so a side-by-side comparison would not be possible but I will try and report back on the performance.
  • If your antenna is a Winegard Sensar "batwing" you have the best RV antenna for VHF. Check all your coax connections and cables and make sure they are not corroded and connections are tight.
  • What VHF channels do you think you should get? What part of the state are you in? Most stations are UHF these days since going digital. I assume you have the power booster turned on, you have checked all connections inside and out. Winegard has an addon attachment called the Wingman but it is improves UHF signals.

I replaced a then 12 year old Batwing with the king controls Jack antenna and have had decent results with it. Others have done extensive test and have found the Winegard with the Wingman provides superior overall reception.
  • The Jack (King Controls) doesn't do VHF very well, and isn't as good as the Winegard, by both measurement and side by side testing.

Keep in mind your Winegard is 20 years old, after all.
