Winegard SK-SWM-3

Has anyone installed this model yet? I did and have nothing but problems from the get-go.

Even though the control box shows a lock on 99 101 103 my HR-24 keeps showing no lock on 99 and 103.

I spent a long time on the phone with Winegard but even the tech admitted it was too new for them.

After hours on the phone, it was agreed upon that it was an alignment issue but are not sure why. They had me check all the bolts, etc. Everything looks tight and where it belongs but still problems persist.

I have a small monitor I took up to the roof and watched the signal meter from 103 as I "tweaked" the dish and arm (at Winegards encouragement) until I got it right. Well, I got 99 and 103 at mid-90's after doing that.

Put the dish down this morning and drove all day. Show up at campground, deploy dish, and wouldn't you now it, no lock on 99 or 103.

I had to go back up on the roof, with monitor and play around. Monitor battery died, had to climb down, get power cord, back up. Then HR-24 went to screen saver. Back down, back up. I probably did this over a dozen times within 2 hours because the dish kept moving when I put pressure on it so I had to stow it and then put it back up. A helper would have been nice at this point but my DW, who is in a wheelchair, was patiently waiting for me to fix this mess so she could watch her shows.

At this point I am pretty pi$$ed off that I spent over $1500 for a product that is more work that a tripod.

I sent Winegard an email again so we'll see what happens. The tech asked me who the installer was, I said I was. I didn't really appreciate the tone in the voice when they heard that as if automatically assuming I wasn't good enough to do this install.

We'll see what happens.

  • From what you describe, it's actually quite possible that your installer did bend something. The dish itself is not attached while in the box and if it gets dropped, bent, kicked stepped on (tweaked in any way) it cannot be repaired and needs to be replaced. Without trying a new dish I can't say that this is the actual problem, but it certainly is a possibility.
I would continue to work with the Winegard tech support folks and you will likely have to get to a repair facility that can check it out further. I have the exact same antenna and I see close to 100 on the 101 transponders and 95+ on all of the 99 and 103 working transponders. I run a Genie and an H25 and life is pretty good.
Can you tell me if your PI is black or Gray?

What model receiver(s) are you using? The HR24 only? How long have you had this antenna? Have you been able to go into the Repeat Satellite Setup routine, set it to 17-slimlime 3 and switch type to 01-SWM. Where and what type power inserter do you have installed (look at the bottom of the PI)? Before you search are you able to get to Signal Strength and then Signal meter after setting the proper antenna/switch type?

HR-24. Wired directly from PI to HR-24. Setup was checked, double, triple, etc. The techs had me do it twice to make sure. Yes, I could view signal strength while activating antenna. This was after I did complete reset on HR-24. Not sure of the model of the PI. It came with the SK-SWM3. Made in China.

The thing is, I was able to jiggle around the dish/arm until I finally got 90's on the 99 and 103. After stowing, driving for a day, and redeploying, it would not lock again. I went back up, rejiggled while watch signal strength, and got a good lock on 99 but only 77 on 103.

So, as I sit here right now, I have all my channels but signal is only 70 on 103. I don't want to climb on the roof everyday after driving to get this aligned so DW can watch TV.

Something appears to be out of alignment with the dish. What I don't know. The entire package was put on my roof still in the box. The build is pretty robust so it's not like it could be bent enough to prevent good locking.

Maybe the builder dropped mine on the way out the door to lunch or something.

EDIT: Re: PI model, it is screwed to back of cabinet. I don't really want to rip evertthing out tonight to look at it. It must be working though as I get all the channels - in manual mode. GGRRRRR!
I tried to send you a PM but you are not accepting.
  • The Winegard Tech is right on as to setting up the system. You also cannot be going through any splitters between the dish and the receiver and the PI (unless they are rated for SWM use). What kind of readings do you get when you get to the signal strength part of setup? What are the meter readings? No BBC's required. Do not install! If you are ready to throw in the towel let me know, I would be more than happy to take it off your hands, hehe. Good Luck! PM me, I will try to walk you through it.

  • My guess is that you either still have a BBC installed or you have not configured your receiver correctly. Dish type should be Slimline-3S (SWM) with Multiswitch. Read the choices carefully.

I have had better results overall if the PI is inserted in the line from the dish, before any splitter. In any case, that doesn't seem to be your issue.
  • No, not needed. When I first talked to Winegard, the first tech asked if I had the splitter installed. He said it was necessary. The next tech said take it out. Well, it made no difference either way. In fact, yesterday, after I shifted the dish all around and had 90's on all three satellites, the splitter was not installed, and still is not. Again, with the amount I paid, I expected a much better product.
  • Do you have the B-Band converters installed, never had any issues with mine.
