I can count on one hand and have fingers left over the times I needed 4wd while towing. Mostly backing uphill into a spot in wet or slick conditions. Even then the lower gearing probably contributed more than the added traction.
The number of times we used it while not towing is uncountable. We unhook and go exploring the back roads, 2 tracks, and other areas mountain goats are afraid to go.
We also use it in winter. Maybe everyone else here is wealthy enough to own several different vehicles, one for each possible set of conditions or needs. We are not. So DW has her Subaru as her daily driver, and I have my truck, and no other vehicles.
I am curious why the earlier responder commented insurance is higher. My insurance would be exactly the same whether 2wd or 4wd model. That is not used in the rate setting according to our insurance. Costs more to buy, get slightly less MPG, and slightly lowers towing capacity, but insurance is a non factor.
