Dear Smiths,
The answer to the question you are asking is very much dependent on where you expect to go. A truck and trailer/5er has a lot of charm, but traveling with a child will be somewhat of an inconvenience at least. When in a motorhome, our children or now GC were always buckled in. If something was needed (a seemingly constant issue) one could unbuckle, do/get whatever and return without loss of road progress. Unbuckle was only allowed at the driver's permission so safe conditions could be attained.
As soon as the facilities of the coach are separate from the cab, a lot of the convenience is lost.
The lack of a small vehicle will not be a big need in much of this country. We have traveled extensively with a medium C and a now a small A. Rarely is parking it an issue. At ~30ft LOA, you would be closed out of very few campgrounds. In the east and west coast megapoli and should include Chicago, there is adequate public transportation. In the vast interior, not so much. But there, make plans to rent (hire) a car for the few days you need it and you have no concern about towing.
I problem that my friends/family from UK and Europe have is understanding the size and therefore travel times required to get anywhere in the middle of this country. To that end, please, purchase one of the mapping/planning packages (either Street Atlas or Streets and Trips) and learn to use it to make the driving plans. You may be surprised. In the UK, and hour's drive will get you somewhere. In much of this country, a day's drive will get you nowhere.
With a little planning, you will join a growing rank of tourists that have a lot of great memories.
