In my opinion a LSD is a must have in a truck but I use a truck like a truck. I haul and tow in all kinds of conditions both on and off road. If I only drove around on pavement in good weather I guess it wouldn't be that big of a deal.
When you're in slippery conditions the difference between an open diff. and a LSD is night and day.
1/2 ton trucks are most certainly available with a LSD. I had one in my Dodge 1500 and it went better in the snow than anything I've ever driven.
For a trailer that weighs 7,500 I'd be looking for a 2500 truck for sure. Especially if that's the published weight of the trailer which is always too low. After you add people, luggage, food, firewood, etc. you will be way over the payload capabilities of a 1500 truck.
