More power to you for the research. I know it's easy to get caught up in the "bigger is better" mindset, but that simply is not true. Camping is first and foremost "camping", so don't be scared off by "small". I grew up camping in a 8' truck camper with my parents and brother; it was fine, since most camp time is spent outside anyways; the camper was for cooking and sleeping. And my wife and I started out in a Toyota mini-van with a bed in the back and a campstove (towing a couple of ATVs)!
Sounds like a popup is an ideal starting point for you. And of course, as your family grows, you can always upgrade/grow as needed in the future!
