I agree with 4x4van and Dutchman Sport. Don't get sold into the "bigger is better" mindset. It doesn't have to be that way.
One thing I'd add is that as a young family with a 4 year old boy, the "charm" of a tent/PUP is that it brings you closer to the outdoors than a hard-sided TT. With basically just canvas between you and the outdoors, you experience it more. That is something your son will love - hearing the crickets and frogs and all the noises while he's snuggled in his sleeping bag.
As Dutchman Sport mentions, starting with a tent can get you out camping right now. As you build your camping gear, you can be looking for a great deal on a PUP - because you won't be in a rush to get out there (you already are). Later, the tent can be used as an extra shelter at the campsite, either as a sitting area or sleeping for friends, etc. The rest of the gear will work just as well with tent camping as it will with RV camping.
