Why would an F150 be a hard sell for a family vehicle? You want to camp so why not make some concessions on a family vehicle so you can do the thing you like to do and work all week to do? My family vehicle is a Ram 2500 crew cab that the wife drives to work every day while I drive the 22 year old Suburban. Maybe it's a Western thing but we buy vehicles to handle our play time and don't worry about the gas milage so much, any given day the pickups and big SUV's far out number the little cars in any store parking lot.
A buddy has a newer F150 extended cab short box pickup with ecoboost that tows his 30' camp trailer just fine and gets very good gas mileage around town for a pickup. Personally I like spending twice as much on gas driving my Ram and hang my head in shame when riding in his Ford but that's just me, LOL.
