I got quite a few thousand off the price of my C for exactly that reason, it had a funky musty odour because the previous owner had passed away and it sat for a little over a year while family squabbled over his estate. In coastal FL I guess it doesn't take long for the heat and humidity to do their thing.
In order to make the 1,500 mile drive a little nicer we first emptied a full can of Fabreeze into anything upholstered, then we drove as far north as we could with rear windows cracked open and the dash fan on high speed to vacuum out as much smell as possible. Just one day of that made a huge difference. When I got home I put a commercial ionizer (a buddy is in the insurance restoration biz) in it for a weekend. Then had the upholstery and carpet cleaned, then put the ionizer back in for another weekend.
After all that and sitting for a week sealed up, you had to concentrate to detect an odour.
It cost me in total (YMMV) about $500 to save $3k. off the price, a good investment I'd say.
I agree you are probably in the minority. I would not want to detect an odor, even if it were very faint. If I could concentrate and smell it I would not be satisfied.
