Before a trip should I turn off the water of my house?

I always turn ours off if we will be gone more than a couple of days. Once we were gone for 2 weeks and a pipe broke in the yard and flooded my yard and the neighbors with a resulting water bill of over $100.00. When one of the neighbors realized where all the water was coming from he contacted our son to come shut it off. So now it is easier and cheaper to turn the water off, thankfully the broken pipe was in the yard and not in the house. :)
