When you make your plans always try to have a second possible chocie. We were going to stay at a National Monument and when we arrived they were closed to put in new buildings. We stopped at a tourist information office and asked for help in finding a park. We were directed to a pit of an RV park after we had explained carefully that we wanted a public park to set up our tent. Luckily it was still early enough that we could travel on for several hours to our next stop.
Be willing to make changes if you find something along the way. We were directed to a National Forest in Nebraska that we really liked.
