Best campsites

If you ever make your way to West Virginia, there are several state parks with nice campsites available. Black water Falls state park is a great place to visit. There is a private campground before you enter the park that is very nice with full hook ups.

Also Tomlinson Run state park ( my home campground) Is also really nice. They have electric hookups but no water. But the sites are large and wooded. Several pull through sites. Even the back in sites are spacious. I never have a problem with the 30 footer. Have fun and welcome.

I love the "State Park Camping Experience" in so many states. Generally, the sites are large; here in Michigan, they are nicely wooded, too.

Something I've discovered: I have been able to make reservations at "impossible" State Parks like Ludington, by simply checking the reservation system periodically. Many folks will make reservations a year out (and at first glance the park is "sold out") - but then are forced to cancel as "life" gets in the way of their camping.

I also agree that there ARE private parks with huge spaces - you'll just have to check their websites. The ones who offer large sites will be bragging about it :-)

Check out any Core of Engineers campgrounds near you. They are usually located on bodies of water and have electric and water hookups.

National Forests, almost always spacious and often underutilized. Google Earth is your friend. Find the campground and then google it. You will find reviews in multiple web sites usually.

uscampgrounds.info shows all publicly owned campgrounds in the US, with links to information. Great resource.

Start by setting a bookmark at RV Park Reviews. Next decide where you would like to go, and find the parks there. When you have a park in mind, run them though the above site. When that is done, then go to Google Earth and locate the subject campground and see how well GE fits with what you have learned.

Michigan has lots of campgrounds. Some are beautiful and some are crampgrounds. That is what that site is for. If you know when and where you are going, make reservations during the season. The good places fill up fast. You also will need the 11$ sticker (Michigan Recreational Passport) that you can get with the vehicle registration, The Sec of State or at the first park of the season.

I'll echo what DutchmenSport said.

In WI state parks offer some of the best of what you are looking for. Just be prepared to reserve 11 months in advance. The electric sites get snapped up early. There are some crummy sites in WI SP, but most are pretty good.

We just back from the UP of Michigan and stayed at five different national forest campgrounds. Sites were very spacious with two right on Lake Superior. Fire rings but no hookups.

I’ve had my best luck with state, county and municipal parks. It’s pretty easy to get info on the first. The other two can be difficult. Most of my favorites came from word of mouth.

Never pass up a chance to pick the brain of someone that has been on the road for awhile.
