What about using GameCams? You can buy some that take decent quality pics at places like Cabelas. Won't cost a fortune, you'll burn some batteries, but if there are any issues you can probably catch the culprits. You don't say what kind of unit you have, but they can be wrapped around things as they come with straps. Heavy duty double-sided Velcro will probably work but make sure you remove the cameras before you travel as you don't want them falling off onto a roadway possible causing damage.
