The Ford truck and truck camper is a great idea for practicality, but not for living in it for two years, but if you can then do that. Working on a regular vehicle is so much easier, and you can drop the camper in the parking lot so any auto mechanic can get it on his lift or in his garage. On that same note, a trailer is as easy to take off too, and will give you more room for full-time living, but harder to take off road.
Stay away from California for anything to do with money.
In Georgia you will pay a sales tax of sorts just to register the vehicle (rv or trailer, but not a truck camper), but not a sales tax if buying used, only when you go to get a license plate and register it will you pay the sales tax, which they call by another name, but it is a sales tax nonetheless.
You do not need friends in a state. FInd a state with low taxes for registering and buying and get it there.
Southern states will have less rust on used vehicles, and trailers. Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and South Carolina. Louisiani will have hurricane flooded vehicles you have to watch out for (and watch the history on a used vehicle that it was not in that flooded state as vehicles get shipped all over the country for selling). Tennessee and North Carolina and states north might see more salted roads in the winter and have the resulting rust. However for a two year ownership rust is not going to be a big deal unless the brake lines are rusted to the frame and not able to be worked on.
For buying new you have none of these issues.
If venturing south of the border, I would want a new or newish vehicle to avoid breakdowns. Mexico is not going to be the safest place and I cannot say for any others, though people travel as you will a lot with no issues.
Check out Nevada for tax status. Get your cell phone there as it has no or very low taxes.
Where you buy a vehicle and where you register it does not matter, it can be different states, you are not required to stay inside state lines. The state you register in might be more expensive or the state you buy it in might be more, just depends on the states.
IF buying used then some states will tax you and some will not as the vehicle was already taxed when it was originally bought so taxing it again is double taxation which is illegal here. They cheat and call it by another name then double tax you anyway. FInd a state that does not.
For selling it will not matter to you about taxes, you get your money and the buyer deals with the fallout.
For selling you will do better in some states than others. Sell in California, lots of money there.
