Tough call to make as either decision could have expensive repairs down the road.  If that was my situation I would tent camp and accumulate more money and try next camping season to get an RV.  Pouring money into older units to acquire and keep them roadworthy isn't the ideal way to enter the RVing world.  Maybe you could finance the trailer using the cash to get a dependable tow vehicle or vice versa.  Hope it works out for you either way, we initially tent camped with our kids before I was able to convince my DW to go along with purchasing an RV.
