Campground pot luck dinner?

We're going on our first trip in two days. The campground we are going to is having a potluck thanksgiving dinner. I am not sure we will attend but saying we do...what is considered an acceptable amount to,prepare. We are a family of four.

  • I go to pot lucks but only eat what I brought. Yes that means that I usually make a main course, and dessert but that is ok by me. I love to eat but need to know where and how my food is prepared. Don't go out to eat very often.

If going to a pot luck I would normally prepare the following.

    Pies, ONE
Cakes I do not do cakes but ONE
    Cookies, One dozen
    Cheesecake ONe

Otherwise enough for 4-8 standard servings is normally what I see.. Some folks bring enough to feed a small army. but assuming there are two of you, Then enough for say six people is good.
  • Mac 'n Cheese is usually a big hit at pot luck. All ages love it. Bake it for homemade taste in a throw away pan.
I also make a layered salad with lettuce, onion, frozen thawed peas, shredded cheese, crumbled bacon and cover (seal) top with mayo. You can make it the night before.
  • We have made a lot of nice friends at pot lucks and there is always more than enough food.
Go and make it a great time.

Despite the above posts, go to the pot luck. A lot of camping is about meeting other campers which is hard to do when it's cold out. LouLou summed it up pretty well and if the DW has a favorite dish then bring it. If you do not want to cook then bring several large pies. How much would it cost to take your boys out to eat? Spend close to that if buying from the store.
Congrats on the new to you 5er and doing your homework on towing it.
  • I went to a CG potluck on a Thanksgiving trip - got to know the layout of the facilities very well shortly after - if you know what I mean. Never again.
  • 1. Make enough green bean casserole to serve four.
    2. Put it on the buffet table next to all the other bowls of green bean casserole.
    3. Go out for dinner. :)

I have some standard things I take for pot luck meals. I usually just use the largest dish/bowl I have.

Ribs....6-8 racks fit in my slow cooker, meatballs or chilli I fill the slow cooker

If the recipe calls for a glass pan then I would make enough for
    a 9 x 13.

Could you call the campground and ask if they know approximate numbers of people.

The lady next door does a lot of pot lucks and her family is a 4 person. Whatever she makes she takes enough for 12. She never takes 1 pie but at lest 2.

You can never take too much.
  • I use a general rule to bring a quantity equal to 150% of what we would eat, if it were the only thing we were eating.

To translate that for you, if your family of four would eat three large servings of "mystery dish" then you should bring a "mystery dish" that serves 18.
  • Most of the potlucks we attend suggest a dish for 8 to 10. If it's going to a small potlucks for just a small crowd, a smaller dish should do.
