As can be seen there are various ways to skin this cat.
I would NOT register it to the address of a US friend. This could make for some awkward questions to be answered by them it the IRS ever came snooping around & found them with a sizable asset that they have not paid taxes on.
As already mentioned, form your own LLC. As mentioned already, Montana is very good at this. No sales tax on the RV, even if bought in another state. No annual inspection either. The LLC host will be able to put you on to insurance companies which deal with these situations where the owner is an LLC & there is no US 'home' address.
Once the initial costs of establishing the LLC are covered the annual fees are not great & the LLC host company does the annual legwork of vehicle registration.
Once the LLC is formed, go RV shopping. Have fun.
