Another financial pothole to look out for is sales tax. Most people from overseas are surprised to find that even private sales of used goods are subject to it.
Not all states tax used vehicle sales, but many do (Washington is one). It was 8.2% when we bought ours in WA three years ago (about $3300 on our rig). On the flip side, annual license fees are quite low, particularly in the smaller counties that don't have large metropolitan areas with transit ($117 on our motor-home in Skagit County this year). King County (where Seattle is) has rates more than double those where we live. The license fee is weight related. Our car (4800 lb GVW) was only $58.
As far as special extra driver's license requirements, it's typical that whatever state your license is from, other states will recognise your "home" state's requirements and not require you to get extra testing if they have stiffer requirements for residents, such as the tag axle in California or the "non-commercial" license for vehicles over 26,000 pounds GVW in several states.
Neighborhood friends have a 42' HR with a tag axle and they travelled many states. I'll ask them if they've had to get extra licensing anywhere and I'll let you know.
