Cracked Rear Axle on 5er

I'd be wary. Do you camp near the ocean much?

You don't say what kind of RV you have, how old, or how heavy. But I would be taking very good pictures and calling the axle manufacturer first thing Monday morning.

What are the axle ratings? Have you weighed it?

Defect or road hazard. Usually they bend and lose alignment.

I have a 30 foot Jayco 5er. The 5er is 10 years old and I never overload it. What is a reasonable price to replace the axle so I am more informed when I talk to the shop tomorrow?

Last summer we had a hub fail while towing. The shop determined that a weld had broken, allowing the axle to move. It was where the Dexter axle is welded to the Forest River mounting bracket.

Dexter replaced both axles working with our Extra-Ride Extended Warranty.

Took 31 days to get them in and three hours to get them installed.

As I looked at the two bad axles, it was obvious the welds were machine made by industrial robots. And that the original axle/ bracket were about 1/8 of an inch off, so it was amazing the welds had held as long as they did.

That is how something like this happens. Much is done without a human ever really looking at the product to ensure it was done right.

New 5200 pound axle is $350 drum to drum. Maybe 2 to 4 hours to replace.

I have to keep things in perspective. No one was hurt. I'm sleeping at home tonight. I'm wasn't stranded for hours and hours. Lets hope the shop is reasonable.

Before I just replaced the axle I would take it to a commercial Trailer Axle shop and see if they can diagnose what caused this. Otherwise it may just be repeated.

Ten years is NOT old for those steel components. And I am not sure if you are talking about the AXLE or the SPINDLE. This makes a big difference.

There could be underlying problems that you need to find and fix. Or it could be just a very hard shock to the suspension. But a shock of that magnitude you would have known about for sure.
