You said you're heading south of Durango (Hwy 160) in Colorado. I'd suggest you work your way to I-40 and take that across to Albuquerque then take 550 north to Bloomfield/Aztec, New Mexico and a little further into Colorado near Durango.
I-40 can get storms but I-70 would be worse if a storm comes through. From I-70 you'd take I-25 south to 160 west and before coming to Pagosa Springs, CO on 160 you'd have to tackle Wolf Creek Pass which is a biggie (a ski hill is there). Driving it in November would not be pleasant.
I-40/550 wouldn't involve any big mountain passes to cross but still monitor the weather closely as you travel.
