Daytime headlights

My DH and I have a difference of opinion on this one. I like to always have the headlights on while driving.

He is concerned that our tow vehicles battery will die. We typically only drive about 3 hours max at a time.

Our Toad is a 2012 jeep wrangler.

Thoughts....
  • The toad should not use it's battery for anything other then Aux. braking device if equipped and needs power to run.
The lights are powered from the coach chassis system and should not be effected by toad other then a little additional load.
This should be a non-issue. I have wired in driving lights to front of coach. They are on when the ignition switch is in run position. I installed a switch to shut them down manually if the need arises. We virtually never drive at night.
He may want to wire an indicator in the coach to show that the lights are on so when you shut down for the day it will remind driver to shut the lights off.
  • It's the law up here in Canada and it's built into the vehicles sold here and it has never caused battery issues as long as I can remember.

Your husband is wrong. Turn them on and stay safe.
  • Wait a minute, if your TV's alternator is so marginal it can't support headlights along with the rest of the load, you have a big problem.

I think he's nuts, and I see nothing wrong with driving with the headlights on. It certainly isn't going to kill the battery on a TV that is functioning normally. That said, I don't see the issue as being worthy of a fight, either. When he's driving, let him drive. He should return the favor and let you do the job your way when you are driving.
  • I agree with you. Headlights on help others to see you, especially on two lane roads.
  • that is a NON issue.

daytime lights use about 5 amps and the other needs for car/trailer is maybe 20.. air for jeep another 20... so maybe 50 total . the charging system is 90 or 110 amps.. so there is at lease 40 amps to keep batteries up.. so there is excess charging. batteries will stay charged just fine.

my opinion.. I am a retired auto mechanic.. 43 years.
