It all depends. It depends on lots of things as others have listed. The more adaptable you are the better off you are.
Want that FHU site that can accommodate a 40'er with the stunning view on a holiday weekend? Good luck at driving up & getting that without a reservation months in advance.
Want a spot Sunday to Thursday, not fussy about which site in the CG, don't care if it has services or not, & you have a medium to small sized unit, then you stand a much better chance winging it without reservations.
All bets are off for the big holiday weekends. Almost need reservations at Walmart for those weekends.
