Tell us what sort of campsites you'd find desirable (or acceptable). Full hookups? No hookups? Amenities, no amenities? It makes a huge difference. Also, where will travel? Some areas have really full campgrounds during summer, like Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Denver vicinity, the L. Superior 'north shore' in Minnesota, etc. But go an hour or two away from a popular area and often one can find sites.
I rarely make any reservations. In fact, I can't recall if I've made any in the past 10 years other than in Yosemite Valley during July. Even there I managed to snag 2 consecutive nights (Fri & Sat in 2 different sites) just a week or so prior to departure, and I used the Sunday morning after to drive up to Bridalveil CG and pick out a first-come campsite, where I stayed for the next several nights.
When I plan a trip, I figure out roughly where I will want to stop each night and I'll know of 2 or 3 CGs or boondock sites that I could try for each of the stops. Usually national forest CGs for me... no hookups.
Check out freecampsites.net if you don't care about hookups or amenities but just want to camp plain and simple.
