Do newer generators need to exercise regularly?

I used to own a 15 years old Onan 4000. I was told to run it once a month to keep it healthy. I now own a newer model (around 3 years old). I thought technology probably improves a lot in 12 years. Do...

If it's electronically excited (inverter) you don't. If it has slip rings and brushes, conventional genny, you do.
There's nothing in the owner's manual about 'exercise' for a Honda. Perhaps that's an urban myth kinda thing.
