Doing My Homework First

My wife (Herself) and I are finally retired and able to plan our escape to serious RVing. We are in the early planning stages and not in a rush. We would like to use our 2001 F150 4X4, but only if we can find a comfortable RV that it can pull safely. It seemed wise to start with the numbers supplied by Ford.

GVWR 6500
Curb Weight 5500
GCWR 13000
Max Trailer Weight 8000

By subtracting the GVWR from the GCWR you get 6500.
Eighty percent of 6500 is 5200.

Would it be safe to tow a trailer or a small 5th wheel if its maximum weight was 5200 lbs or less?

Or, is my approach entirely wrong?

Much thanks

Dan

Good Stuff!!

Thanks for the education.

If it matters, our truck is a 2001 Silver XLT 4x4 Super Crew 5.4L 3.55LS with tow package.

I figured the Payload by first subtracting a 5000 lb curb weight from the 6500 lb GVWR, for 1500 lbs. Assuming a passenger & cargo load of 600 lbs leaves me with 900 lbs for tounge or pin weight.

We are attracted to the Escape company's 19' 5th wheel because it is advertised for light trucks. It has a GVWR of 4400 lbs, giving it a max pin weight between 800 (20%) and 1100 (25%) lbs.

Like you said, it seems we would be pushing the truck too hard in the mountains.

I guess we should change trucks or go with a TT.

Dan
