Rockhillmanor, when you speak of seeing that number on a 'card', what card is that? What is it I would ask for?
Thanks for all of the great input! I really do appreciate it!
When you choose what vehicle you want to sit down and deal on, the salesman has to get some sort of information sheet on it so he knows where he is at price/cost wise before he starts negotiating.
It can be a card taken from an inventory board on the wall. Or he goes into an office and pulls out an information sheet on it. Most are usually on the wall for easy access for the key number etc.
This works for used vehicles.
The new ones there is an invoice on the vehicle and the salesman knows what per cent he has between cost and sale price. ALSO there is what is called a "pack" on new vehicles.
Which is a dollar amount the owner of the dealership decides what to put into the "pack". That is a dollar amount above the invoice price and that is HIS personal profit margin he is not willing to give up. And the salesman can not go lower than the cost of the vehicle plus the pack.
If to make a deal it goes lower than the pack plus cost the salesman does not get commission on that amount. Salesman look to work at dealerships that have the lowest pack to be able to make better deals. And why the bottom line to a buyer between dealerships may vary.
I digress!
Regarding te OP's question on where to look for number on a used vehicle.
The salesman will have the info sheet/card in front of him when you sit down. It will also have all the specs of the vehicle on it options etc. Just calmly ask to see it to go over some of the options or engine specs etc. Then peruse it for the number that contains the base cost! :B
