I wear gloves from Home Depot, Lowe's, Harbor Freight, and/or Walmart. I think Harbor Freight has the best value, and the gloves are the same as the gloves Home Depot has sold in the past. Then, I use hand sanitizer before touching anything. After hand sanitizer, I feel I'm good to touch the rig so I can wash my hands with germ-killing soap. Same goes for when I connect the hose. Dump-valve handles get spritzed with a sanitizer, too.
I figure, if my regimen keeps me or, especially, my gal from getting sick one time, it's worth it. It takes about 10 seconds to put gloves on and 5 seconds to take 'em off. I don't care about ten dollars (spread over 50 or so uses) being "thrown away". I use the gloves for other stuff, too, like packing wheel bearings or staining wood. There's a box in the camper, in my shop and both trucks. Another thing, my hands almost always have cuts from working, so keeping crud off them seems wise.
I don't consider myself anal or a germ-o-phobe, but I guess few people with those afflictions would recognize and/or admit to either. I consider the gloves a safety procedure, like connecting your trailer's chains to the hitch or chocking your wheels.
