Engine as brakes down a mountain

Our first trip is to Loft mountain, VA,3 adults 2 grandparents, 4 teenagers, and stuff. 27 ' ford conquest by gyulfstream advise is to keep in I low all the way down, use engine as breaks. does that make sense?
  • A rule of thumb is to use the same gear going down as it took to climb up. As long as it's below redline rpms you're not hurting the engine and it does save your brakes. In fact, if you don't use engine braking you are more likely to overheat your brakes and can get into real trouble.
