Extending Battery cables

I recently upgraded from a single battery to 2 6v batteries that I want to wire in series. My problem is that I had to find a new spot to house the batteries and the cables won't reach. How can I extend the cables in order to reach the new battery location? Thanks all in advance!!
  • Another option would be to put a battery disconnect on the current length of cable, then new cable out to the new battery location. Kind of using the battery disconnect as a splice point.
  • I would look for replacement cables in an appropriate length, particularly if you're talking about one large positive and one large negative cable. Often appropriate cables are sold as "switch to starter battery cables" and come in various lengths and gauges.

I think West Marine (and probably other stores) will make up custom cables to specification for not too much cash, as well; certainly easier and cheaper than purchasing a decent crimp tool for a single set of cables.

If you have a bunch of wires, you could either extend all of them, or preferably put in some sort of a bus bar or distribution box and run a single set of cables to the battery.

If the new wire run is more than a few inches, it would be a good idea to put a fuse in the positive lead close to the battery to prevent a fire in case it should ever happen to short out somehow.
  • What distance ?
For a short distance most auto parts store will have a large selection .For a splice maybe add a selector switch !

Use butt connectors to add the necessary amount of extension to each cable.

I replaced my battery cable from the Converter/charger BAT + to the battery bank main switch using a 4AWG ANCOR BRAND MARINE GRADE very flexible Cable.

Ordered my Cable from EBAY SALES store along with ANCOR Crimp on Ring terminals... Cable came in 25-foot length on a spool for around $50. You can also purchase these items on AMAZON...
