There are pros and cons with each selection. Nothing will be perfect.
Trailer: you will get more living space and storage. You might even find a two bedroom model. They are lighter weight than a 5th wheel so you might not have to go with a huge expensive pickup. Study the weights carefully on both.
As you state, once you get to a place you'll have the truck to sitesee which will be easier regarding dismantling hookups and finding parking places. Also, you'll be able to take some very scenic roads (probably unpaved) with the truck. Driving the Class C would surely shake its inards - and yours. :) You'd probably get better fuel mileage with a truck than a Class C.
Class C: Very convenient and comfortable for driving from place to place. You'd have to stick with a smaller unit for ease in finding parking spots as you tour. Class Cs, especially small ones, have very little storage in the outside bins. Think of where to stash a BBQ, chairs, etc.
If going with a Class C I would recommend that you set up one of your cars for towing behind. It would make things easier in every way and your siteseeing mileage would be better in a car, ease of parking, driving those side roads, storage for the BBQ and chairs while traveling, etc.
Make a list of the two and choose what's important to you. Good luck! Sounds like a fun trip.
