Nick,
You have an amazing collections of opinions here. Just remember what is said about opinions. We camped and traveled with two kids, but they a years out of here now. We are travelers and not campers, but I will say that for the cost of managing a towed, you can rent on the occasions you need. If your C is less than 30feet You should target use in the mid/upper 20s) there is no hassle with grocery shopping except you all go. But that is no bigy as the muchkins play games at the dinette. Having everything always available as you travel is a good thing.
TTs that have more room than a 2Xft C are also getting big to drag. They may be nicer for the long stay, so that is all a balance you will have to work out on your own.
So, it comes out to are you going traveling or camping. You have to work that part out. I can suggest that you beat up Craig's list for everything in striking range. Everything in life is a compromise. Life on the road is just the same. Just get cameras and binoculars for everybody and enjoy the entire trip.
