We are a family of 4. We just purchased our second trailer, and against popular suggestion, we are glad we started off with the first trailer first. At the time, we didn't know if we would stick to camping, and wanted to prove it to ourselves before spending "real" money. The small hit that we took on the first trailer was more than worth the peace of mind. Not to mention the long list of must haves that we used to shop with.
If you make compromises, I could live without space, slides, and other niceties. But I would make sure you have a bed for everyone and still a place to sit. Of course, you might not be making that many compromises.
