I think you'll find that most of us Ham Radio Operators who were licensed before the 1980s have done our home work and were tested by the
"steely eyed examiner" at the FCC office to prove it.
Back in the day, a Ham Radio license was about equal to a two year degree in "Electronics Engineering Technology", specializing in RF technology.
