Hi and welcome to the forums!
I am currently at work and at my place of employment we have a large number of people from India who work here. Most of them drive and own their own automobiles. I just asked one of my friends how they did it.
She said when she came to the US, the first thing she did was apply for a social security number. Because she had her Visa she could. AFTER he received her SSN number, everything opened up. Without the SSN, she couldn't do anything.
She owns her own home, ownes her own car, has her car registered, titled, and insured in Indiana and has credit. You cannot even get a credit card without having the SSN first.
So, I advise applying for an SSN immediately, then everything will open up for you.
In Indiana, you do not receive your drivers license or your registration at the BMV. They are mailed to you. Sometimes it can take up to 2 weeks to get them in the mail. Depending upon your state, you need to act accordingly.
